Sailing the Idyllic Waters of Greece
Ahoy, fellow travelers and sea enthusiasts!
I am thrilled to share one of my favorite experiences ever – the time my friends and I decided to hire a yacht and go sailing the idyllic waters of Greece. So let me start with a bit of intro – my friends Alex and Hrisi had just passed a sailing course and got their Day Skipper & Competent Crew permits. We were attending their wedding when they told us all about their sailing plans and naturally when I heard about it, I had no doubt we had to go sailing together.
Organizing the Trip
To make a long story short, we started planning in the fall of 2019 and went sailing the following summer. The destination was easy to decide on – Greece! We chose a wonderful yacht club in Kavala which we would be happy to recommend to anyone – Aegeas Yachting. They have a selection of different yachts you can hire and since we were 3 couples, we hired a 3-cabin yacht – a Bavaria 40. Our destination was the captivating Island of Thasos, and little did we know that this week would become one of the most cherished memories of our lives.
Day 1: Setting Sail for Thasos
Our excitement was palpable as we set sail towards the Island of Thasos. The wind was robust, and the waves added a thrilling edge to the experience. As a team, we took turns navigating, managing the sails, and dropping the anchor. Our captain, a dear friend, ensured that each one of us participated in every aspect of sailing, fostering a sense of unity and accomplishment.
After several hours of sailing, we reached the island and couldn’t resist the allure of a little bay. We dropped anchor and embraced the opportunity to dive into the crystalline blue waters. The refreshing swim reinvigorated us for the rest of the day. By the end of the day, we headed to the spot where we spent the night – Aliki Gulf. We used our little dinghy boat to get to shore and buy some delicious food from a local tavern, then we enjoyed it on deck watching the sunset.
Day 2-6: Secluded Coves and Enchanting Explorations
The following days were nothing short of a magical maritime adventure. We explored the island’s coastline, discovering secluded coves and charming bays where we dropped anchor (my favorite has to be Vathi Cove though – a magical little piece of haven). Each day presented new opportunities for us to dive, swim, and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Aegean Sea.
Away from the bustling tourist spots, we experienced a serene and liberating sense of freedom. The vast horizon, the gentle lapping of waves, and the symphony of silence awakened our spirits to the wonders of sailing life. With each passing day, we grew more attached to the sea, its mysteries, and the tranquil rhythm of life onboard.
Day 7: The Storm and an Unforgettable Farewell
As our sailing journey drew to a close, Mother Nature had one last surprise for us. A storm swept in, bringing fierce winds, raging waves, and thunder. Thankfully, we were docked safely in the port of Skala Kallirachis, Thasos. Inside our sturdy yacht, we weathered the storm, feeling a mix of thrill and gratitude for our safe haven.
The following day, as we sailed back to Kavala, our hearts were full of both happiness and nostalgia. Suddenly, a family of dolphins emerged, dancing alongside our yacht, as if to bid us farewell in the most enchanting way possible. Their joyful presence reminded us that nature’s wonders are both humbling and exhilarating.
Epilogue: Forever Touched by the Sea
This week of sailing in Greece has etched an everlasting mark on our souls. The sense of freedom, camaraderie, and the magnificence of the sea have left an indelible impression on each of us. We have learned to cherish simplicity, embrace adventure, and marvel at the splendor of our planet.
